  HOW TO REGISTER TO BE AN OVERSEAS ELECTOR

Any Singapore Citizen who is residing overseas may apply to be registered as an overseas elector to cast his/her vote at any of the 9 designated overseas polling stations, if he/she satisfies the following qualifying criteria:-

As on 1 February 2010:
(a) He/she is a Singapore citizen not less than 21 years old;
(b) His/her name is listed on a register of electors in operation1;
(c) He/she is not disqualified from being an elector under any prevailing law; and
(d) He /she is not resident in Singapore but has resided in Singapore for a total of not less than 30 days during the three years immediately before 1 February 2010.

1. An overseas Singapore citizen aged 21 and above will have his/her name listed on a register of electors only if, as on 1 February 2010, he/she still has a Singapore residential address registered with the Commissioner of National Registration (at the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority) (ie. a valid local address in the NRIC), or if he/she had changed his/her NRIC address to a foreign address, he/she has reported a contact address in Singapore (referred to as “local contact address”) with the Commissioner of National Registration (see FAQs for the definition of "contact address" under the National Registration Act).

Application for registration can be made online via the eServices provided at this website using the person’s NRIC number and Singpass. If he/she does not have a Singpass, he/she may still apply for registration, by submitting a completed and signed "Application To Be Overseas Elector" Form, by hand or post, to Elections Department or to any of the 9 overseas registration centres. Registration will remain open until such time when the writ for an election is issued, and will be resumed only after the election. All registrations accepted before an election will remain valid after the election and will lapse only when the registers of electors are next revised. When this happens, Elections Department will notify all registered overseas electors via email to apply for re-registration. The date when the registers of electors are revised and exhibited for inspection will be published in the Government Gazette and announced to the public through the mass media. Overseas Singaporeans can also subscribe to the free election SMS alert provided by Elections Department and be notified when the registers of electors are revised. This service is available for Singapore registered mobile numbers only.
